Do you feel like going to the beach, golf course, or swimming pool instead of coming in to the
office? Do you feel more "burned out" in summer than in winter? Feeling enthusiastic and focused on
work can be much more difficult in summer than in the winter months. It is tough to come to work on
beautiful, clear days when you can envision relaxing on the beach, bicycling down the street, or
pounding the tennis, golf or soccer ball!
If you are a person who enjoys being out of doors in good weather, there are numerous strategies to
employ to satisfy this need:
- Rise early, if possible, and spend some time in your yard before work. The early morning is cool
and quiet and can provide a good start to your day. Pull a few weeds if you have a yard, water your
plants, or just take a short stroll.
- Take short breaks or use your longer lunch time to go outside--walk to the Mall or take your
lunch to a park bench. Soak up some fresh air and sunshine. ou will feel renewed when you return to
the office.
- Use any opportunity to dine outside. Try eating breakfast or dinner on your porch deck, or
balcony--make it an occasion--a fun break from the work-week routine.
- Engage in a sport or activity that involves being outside. Tennis, golf, gardening, walking,
or biking can help you to enjoy the outdoors while accomplishing something else--exercise!
- On days when the heat, humidity, and pollen levels permit, open your doors and windows to let the
fresh air in. Outside sounds and cool breezes can help to make you feel less "cooped up" after being
in a closed office all day.
- Take advantage of daylight savings time and plan outside activities for the evening when it is
cooler but still light.
Studies show that natural sunlight stimulates your brain to
produce neuro-chemicals that help to elevate mood. Enjoy the effects of this natural stimulus!
